Document Examination

A document is defined as anything upon which a mark is made for the purpose of conveying a message. Many seemingly insignificant documents involved in criminal investigations may offer conclusive proof of certain facts. Analysts in the Questioned Documents Section can identify handwriting as being made by a certain individual, determine whether a specific office machine was used in the preparation of a document, identify alterations, decipher obliterated, water-soaked or damaged documents, identify counterfeit documents, recover indented writing and compare inks and papers in order to establish the source or authenticity of a document.
